I didn't realize before that Microsoft bought Bungie prior to the release of Halo C.E. and made it one of their launch titles. Now after all these years it makes me wonder how much of Microsoft's success is because of Bungie and Halo. You know, like what if there never was Bungie or Halo? Would the Xbox had survived? Would we even have a 360? I looked at the numbers of Halo game sales and it's amazing. Does Microsoft need to thank Bungie for the success of their console? Or do you think that another game of it's popularity would have eventually kept the console going? Remember a good console (Dreamcast) can't last if it has no games to support it. I wonder if the Xbox would have fallen victim to the same thing Dreamcast did without Halo.

Halo Combat Evolved
On its release Halo broke sales records; by April 8, 2002, one million units had been sold: this pace was faster than that of any previous sixth-generation console game.[82] During the two months following Halo's release, the game sold alongside more than fifty percent of Xbox consoles.[83] Halo's retail price remained at US$49.99 until November 30, 2003.[84] By July 14, 2003, the game had sold three million copies worldwide,[85] and by January 28, 2004, it had reached four million copies.[86] As of November 9, 2005, Halo has sold over five million copies worldwide.[9]
Halo 2 quote]The first official release of Halo 2 was in Canada, Australia, New Zealand and the United States on November 9, 2004. Anticipation for the game was high; three weeks before this release, a record 1.5 million copies had already been pre-ordered.[34] Massive lines formed at midnight releases of the game; the event garnered significant media attention.[35] This was followed by releases on November 10, 2004 in France and other European countries, and November 11 in the UK. The game sold 2.4 million copies and earned up to US$125 million in its first 24 hours on store shelves, thus out-grossing the film Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest as the highest grossing release in entertainment history.[36] The game sold 260,000 units in the United Kingdom in its first week, making it the third fastest-selling title of all time in the UK. On June 20, 2006, Xbox.com reported that more than a half-billion games of Halo 2 have been played on Xbox Live since its debut. Halo 2 is the best-selling first-generation Xbox game[9] with 8.46 million copies sold by November 2008. As of September 25, 2007, Halo 2 was the fifth best-selling video game in the United States with 6.3 million copies sold, according to the NPD Group.[11] From the day of its initial release and up until mid-November 2006, Halo 2 was the most popular video game on Xbox Live, even after the release of the Xbox 360; its position was eventually surpassed in 2006 by the 360-exclusive Gears of War. Halo and Halo 2 are still some of the most played games for the Xbox console
Halo 3 quote]According to Microsoft, first-day sales of Halo 3 reached $170 million in the U.S., setting a record for highest gross of an entertainment product within 24 hours of its release.[77] The performance beat the previous record setter—Halo 2—which earned $125 million within 24 hours after its launch.[77] Halo 3 broke other records as well; at least four million copies of Halo 3 were pre-ordered globally, making it the fastest pre-selling game to date.[78] Worldwide more than US$300 million worth were sold in the first week, helping to more than double the sales of the Xbox 360 when compared with the weekly average before the Halo 3 launch.
Bill Gates sold copies of the game at the launch in Bellevue, WA. In the U.S., Halo 3 sold 3.3 million copies in its first 12 days on sale,[79] increasing to 3.7 million copies by November 15, 2007.[80] Reuters UK estimated that Halo 3 may have sold up to 5.2 million copies worldwide in the first two weeks after launch.[6] By November 30, 2007, Halo 3 had sold 5 million copies worldwide, and as of that point, was the best-selling video game of 2007 in the U.S., even though the game is only available on one console.[81] On January 3, 2008, Microsoft announced that Halo 3 has sold 8.1 million copies.[8] The game drew over a million Xbox Live members to play online in the first 20 hours, making it the biggest day for Xbox Live gaming in history.[7] The game returned to the top 20 sales charts more than a year after its release in February 2009; Gamasutra reported that the boost might have been due to the release of Halo Wars.[82] As of January 2008, 8.1 million copies have been sold.
Halo 3: ODST [hide]
On release Halo 3: ODST became the top-selling Xbox 360 game worldwide.[84] More than 2.5 million copies of the game were sold within two weeks of release, totaling more than US$125 million in sales.[85] ODST claimed the overall top spot in UK game sales,[86] becoming the 12th highest sell-through for a single platform title in the market.[87] ODST took the top spot on Australian game charts on release and, after being outsold by FIFA 10 in early October, reclaimed the best seller position.[88] In Japan, where first-person shooters have generally fared poorly,[89] ODST sold 30,000 copies by September 27.[90] ODST sold 1.5 million units during September in the United States, the best-selling title for that month.[91][92] In October, the game sold 271,000 units in North America (taking sixth place for game sales); Microsoft reported that ODST sold 3 million units worldwide by November.[93][94] Overall, it was the ninth bestselling game of the year in the United States, one of only two Xbox 360 games to chart.[95] Expecting sales of the game to increase as players wanted to access the Reach beta, UK retailers slashed its price in April 2010.
[/hide]
Reach [hide]
Reach made $200 million in first-day sales, a record for the franchise. Its strong sales suggested to analysts that despite the lagging game market of 2010 the trend might reverse for core titles in the holiday season.[49] In its first sixteen days the game sold $350 million worth of merchandise.[50] Reach premiered at the top of Xbox 360 and multi-platform charts in most territories.[51] In the United Kingdom, Reach's opening week was the fifth-best launch in the territory, beating Halo 3's debut by 20,000 units and ODST by 200,000 units.[52] In its second week on the UK charts Reach was the second bestselling title, being displaced by racing game F1 2010.[53] Reach continued to hold the top place in North America.[54][55] In contrast to its performance elsewhere, Reach fared poorly in Japan, selling 44,413 units its first week, coming in first place. This showing was above ODST's sales of 29,734 in the comparable timeframe but below Halo 3's 61,143.[56] Reach dropped out of the top 20 best selling titles its second week entirely.
